Like many residents of cities on trade routes, the population of Tramsen had to fight a lot. Some colonialists replaced others, the city reflected raids, more than once besieged, but, in the end, gained independence.
The name of the city came from the Berber words «Tala Impan», which is translated «dry stream». The name is sometimes recorded as «tlemens» or «tilimsen».
