The statue of freedom celebrated its centenary in 1986. A century ago, the French people gave this statue to the Americans for friendship, which developed during the revolutionary movement in America. All this time this national monument embodied the friendship of the French and American people. Also, the statue of freedom is a symbol of the democratic regime and freedom.
It is worth saying that the history of the statue of freedom began with the moment when the French sculptor Frederick Auguste Bartoldi was asked to create by 1876. a monument that would be timed to the centenary of signing the Independence Declaration in the United States. The statue of freedom is a joint creation of Americans and French. The American side was erected by the pedestal. As for the French, they made this monument and then gathered it in America.
But the shortage of money could be felt at that time both in Europe and the United States. The French collected donations for the implementation of this project. They carried out a variety of lotteries. Theatrical productions were organized in the United States, auctions were carried out to be able to raise funds. For the pedestal, funds were collected by the summer of 1885. And if we talk about its construction, then it was completed by the spring of 1886. Work on the whole monument was completed in the summer of 1884.
